Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525 – 1569) was a Dutch renaissance painter and a print maker. His favorite theme for painting was landscaping, and peasant scenes. Some called him “Peasant Bruegel” to distinguish him from the rest of the Brueghel dynasty. In 1559 he started to sign on his paintings as a Bruegel without the “h”.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted three oil paintings with the Tower of Babel subject, the first painting was painted of ivory been lost. He painted them while he was in Rome. There is a biblical referral to the tower of Babel in the bible in the book of Genesis. The tower built by unified monolingual humanity to mark their achievement and to prevent them from scattering. The person in the foreground of the paintings may be Nimrod, who by the Bible story was the one that ordered the contraction of the Babel Tower.

"Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.'" (Genesis 11:4)
